Law Enforcement Insight
Based on My Training and Experience
Author: Danny Smith, Lone Guardian Director of Investigation Operations
The phrase “Based on my training and experience” is one with which individuals in law enforcement are undoubtedly acquainted. We frequently articulate this expression in a courtroom context, subsequently elaborating on our extensive years of service, the number of cases handled, and the various training courses undertaken.
In light of the increasing retirements and diminishing interest in careers within law enforcement, departments find themselves compelled to rely more heavily on training as seasoned officers depart from the profession. While experience will eventually accrue among newer officers, the significance of training during this interim period cannot be overstated.
The introduction of younger generations of officers presents challenges related to technology, as well as personal interest and motivation levels. Young trainees demonstrate a desire to engage in inquiry and seek greater involvement in overall decision-making processes. The era of mere admonishments such as “because I said so” or “that is the way it has always been done” has elapsed.
At Lone Guardian, we adopt a training approach emphasizing student participation and engagement. We recognize that individuals possess diverse learning styles, including visual, auditory, and experiential learning. Our curriculum is meticulously crafted to captivate students across all learning modalities, incorporating brief classroom presentations, pertinent and realistic scenario training, and class evaluations and discussions.
